Understanding the Braking System’s Two Core Components 

When it comes to brake repair, two parts tend to come up most often: pads and rotors. Both are essential for stopping power, and both wear down over time. But they wear differently, and the type of wear you experience can determine the kind of repair you need. 

Brake Pads: The First Line of Friction 

Pads do the gripping. 

Brake pads are designed to press against your rotors to create friction and stop your vehicle. They’re made from materials like semi-metallic compounds or ceramics. Over time, they wear thin. When they get too low, they may squeak, trigger a sensor, or grind against the rotor if not replaced. 

Brake Rotors: The Surface They Press Against 

Rotors take the heat—literally. 

Rotors are flat, disc-shaped components that the pads squeeze during braking. They absorb and dissipate the heat from friction. If the rotors become too thin, warped, or grooved, braking becomes less effective and can cause vibrations or pulsations. 

Which Is Worn—Or Is It Both? 

You might need one—or both replaced. 

Often, worn-out pads will also wear down rotors unevenly. If you replace pads without resurfacing or replacing rotors, you risk reduced brake performance and noise. A full inspection determines the right repair for your situation. 

Why It’s Important to Address Both 

Ignoring one part of the system can damage the other. When brake pads wear down, they can overheat or damage the rotors. Likewise, warped rotors can destroy new pads prematurely. 

When to Resurface vs. Replace Rotors 

Thickness and wear patterns matter. 

If your rotors are still thick enough and not deeply grooved, a shop may be able to resurface them. But if they’re below minimum thickness or have significant damage, they’ll need to be replaced to ensure safe, smooth braking. 

Pad Material Makes a Difference

Some pads are more aggressive and wear rotors faster. A shop can recommend the right material for your driving style and vehicle type. Ceramic pads are quieter and cleaner, while semi-metallics offer more bite and heat resistance. 

How Often to Replace Both 

Depends on mileage and driving habits.
